BMI stands for Body Mass Index and it is considered a reliable indicator of total body fat, which is related to the risk of disease and death. The score measures body weight corrected for height and it is valid for both men and women. It is widely used in both research and clinical settings because measurements of height and weight are easy, quick, and relatively noninvasive. But BMI does have some limits. Obesity indices cannot be used to distinguish between excessive weight produced by musculature, adipose tissue or water retention.
