What font to use in your resume? Print E-mail

When composing your resume in Word, it probably dawns on you that there are dozens or even hundreds of fonts (typefaces) on your computer for you to choose from. So why not choose one that's unique and different from everyone else's?

For our profession as airline pilots, it's smart to be conservative in
your choice. The font you decide on gives your resume a particular
personality. Secondly, if the font is not common, it will not show up
on the reader's computer. For a font to be viewable as intended, the
airline's HR computer must have that font installed.

So, what fonts are not only conservative but will show up when HR
views our resume? The fonts below can be safely used on both PC and
Mac operating systems without worry:

  • Arial
  • Times New Roman
  • Verdana
  • Lucida Sans
  • Book Antiqua
  • Tahoma
  • Garamond

What size font should you use? It depends on how much information is on your resume, and what titles or sections you want to stand out. Generally, the body of the resume will be between 9 and 12 points.

Each font at the same size, say 12 points, will be slightly larger or smaller than the others, so experiment with what size makes the resume fit best on the page.
Make your name and categories stand out by sizing them larger than 12 points, and make them bold.
