Prediction: Airlines to Hire More Commercial Pilots in 2025

Let’s be blunt. In 2024, the job market for commercial airline pilots was pretty terrible. Demand for pilots was low due to a number of factors, and the profit margin for passengers is not high enough to justify flying a bunch of mostly-empty aircraft. Fortunately, many in the industry are predicting a turnaround in the next year.
What Happened In 2024 in the Commercial Airline Pilot Job Market?
According to Flying Magazine:
“In 2024, the major U.S. carriers hired 4,834 new pilots, according to data from the Future and Active Pilots Alliance. This figure is a far cry from the over 12,000 pilots hired in 2023, representing a 60 percent year-over-year drop.”
One major factor for the collapse of pilot hiring was simply a lack of planes. Boeing went through many issues for aircraft delivery as the manufacturer was plagued with safety issues. The FAA even had to step in with increased oversight.
Additionally, Boeing’s deliveries were further affected by a strike by the International Association of Machines and Aerospace Workers, which included over 30,000 unionized workers.
While not suffering from the same problems, even Airbus had delays in its deliveries.
Another problem with airline pilot hiring is that the airlines rushed to fill all their vacancies after the pandemic, which may have resulted in an overstaffed workforce when demand inevitably slowed.
Airlines further faced financial difficulties. Spirit declared bankruptcy. Southwest, American Airlines, and JetBlue all enacted a hiring freeze.
Looking Forward to 2025
Now for the good news. Delta has already come out and stated that they expect to hire 5,000 new pilots in 2025. Boeing declared that its normal production has resumed. Much of the industry turbulence will hopefully stabilize.
While many pilots may face displacements from various airlines in the early half of 2025, many are predicting a bounce back and normalization compared to the dismal 2025.
