By receiving approval from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to install SpaceX's Starlink satellite internet equipment aboard its aircraft, United Airlines has accomplished a noteworthy milestone. The Embraer 175 became the first aircraft in United's fleet to be equipped with satellite-based internet access when the FAA granted it a Supplemental Type Certificate (STC).

In May 2025, the airline intends to launch commercial flights with Embraer 175 aircraft equipped with Starlink. With the goal of finishing installations on more than 300 two-cabin regional aircraft by the end of the year, United plans to refit about 40 regional planes every month.

In order to obtain more FAA certifications for over 16 distinct aircraft models across its mainline and regional fleets, United will continue to work with Starlink. This program is a component of United's larger plan to improve the traveler experience by offering fast, low-latency internet access throughout its whole fleet.

In comparison to competing in-flight Wi-Fi solutions, the Starlink system is commended for its small size, weather resistance, simplicity of installation, fuel efficiency, and exceptional dependability. Executives at United think that the improved online experience will draw customers and bolster the airline's competitive advantage.

This move demonstrates United Airlines' dedication to using state-of-the-art technology to enhance in-flight amenities in order to give travelers connectivity experiences that are on par with those on the ground.
